The musical came to be thanks to Stephen Schwartz. The acclaimed lyricist and composer read the Maguire book, a different take on the world L. Frank Baum created at the turn of the 20th century, while resting on holiday in 1995. He immediately sought out the author to adapt the book into a musical. Schwartz eventually met the author in 1998 and walked away with the rights to adapt the novel Wicked into a big Broadway musical.

First, Schwartz recruited Winnie Holzman to adapt a complicated story fitting for a novel into a simplified plot far more suitable for the stage. Wicked the Musical focused on the relationship between Elphaba, the green-skinned outcast, and Galinda, her popular college roommate. Destiny decided these two would become the Wicked Witch of the West and the Glinda the Good Witch of the North, but college reversed these roles.

The characters grew up quickly, learning the perils and joys of love, its jealousies and unrequited pain and its power to heal deep emotional wounds. Wicked also explored the dangerous world of politics and the power of PR. If ever a musical epitomized these times, this is it. Elphaba is a talented, spirited outcast whose cause goes against the grain and inspires hate, so venomously provoking, galvanizing mobs with fire and pitchforks.

Wicked the Musical is an emotional ride, following a misunderstood girl as she finds a place in the world, only to have that world turned upside down. This is more than a revisionist story of Oz before Dorothy. This is a powerfully moving story of acceptance and prejudice told poignantly with amazing songs, costumes, and sets transporting the audience into another world that is eerily familiar.
