Orpheum Theatre - San Francisco Tickets and Seating

This production has been a rarity, since it had been conceived, from the beginning, not to fall flat. The best actors and actresses from past productions were chosen to grace the stage at the Orpheum Theatre. Teal Wicks (Elphaba), Kendra Kassebaum (Glinda), Nicolas Dromard (Fiyero), Carol Kane (Madame Morrible), David Garrison (the Wizard), and Deedee Magno (Nessarose), among many others, opened the San Fran production of Wicked on February 6, 2009.

There have been several cast changes since, but this musical has performed exceedingly well at its West Coast home. Over one million people have visited the Orpheum Theatre with Wicked tickets and the production grossed over $1 million every week its first year and over $75 million to date.

The Orpheum Theatre was chosen to play host to this worldwide phenomenon because it is the main theatre hub of the city. Located at 1192 Market St., the venue opened originally as a grand movie theater in 1926 with vaulted ceilings adorned with a façade emulating a 12th-century French cathedral.

Now a historical landmark, the venue has been renovated twice since becoming a home away from home for Broadway productions making trips across the country on the other coast.

The first renovation came in 1970, and the most recent renovation invested $20 million ensuring the theatre would be more suitable for Broadway shows. This might seem an excessive amount to spend, but considering the theatre’s ownership (Carole Shorenstein, a Tony-Award winning producer, and James Nederlander, the head of the famous Nederlander Broadway empire), the renovation ensured years of promising and profitable theatrical productions.
